VAN VECHTEN, CARL. Paul Robeson as Othello 1944 (Original vintage photograph). Scarce full-length portrait photograph of actor Paul Robeson (1898-1976). Robeson first performed the title role in Othello in London production in 1930, but this photograph probably dates from his legendary performance in the role for the New York Shubert Theater production in 1943-1945. The Van Vechten image of Robeson in this role in the Smithsonian Collection is said to date from 1944 and it is likely that this image was taken in the same photo session. His Broadway run of Othello is widely regarded as the longest run of any Shakespeare play. Robeson won the Spingarn Medal in 1945 for this performance in which Uta Hagen played Desdemona, and Jose Ferrer played Iago. According to the New York Times, Robeson "gave to the role a majesty and power that had seldom if ever been seen on the American stage." 9 7/8 x 7 5/8 inches.
